Why To Hire A Professional Photographer

When organising your big day, most possibly the biggest day of your life, hiring professionals for your wedding is the best choice

Some may consider that hiring professionals would be a logical choice, but sometimes the budget is stretched and you may end up trying to find options to cut the costs.  And some of these options can quite often end up having a friend or family member becoming involved to help in some way instead of hiring a professional.

From experience, I’ve found either a family member is given the job of photographing the wedding, or perhaps a photography student who’s looking at expanding their portfolio. This would be perfect, if the family member or student specialised in Weddings, and had the product knowledge, namely posing, light situations, professional software, various wide and telephoto lenses, off camera lighting and the expertise of how to structure the photography throughout the day without being intrusive, whilst catching every wonderful moment!

Many times I’ve heard of couples who have engaged a friend or family member, or someone who will photograph their wedding for a few hundred dollars , then hear from them later about what a shame the indoor shots were mostly blurry or arms were cut off, or “wasn’t what I was expecting.”.  This is a absolute shame – five, ten, fifty years into married life you want to remember your day for what it was … beautiful.

1. A PROFESSIONAL PHOTOGRAPHER IS FOCUSED TO YOU AND YOUR WEDDING.

A professional will be committed to YOU on your wedding day. They will show up on your wedding day, no questions asked. I’ve heard of “friends” who say they are happy to photograph a wedding, but then bail out a few months – even just a week prior to the wedding. When you book and pay for a professional, they are contractually obligated to carry out the duties that you hired them to perform!

2. A PROFESSIONAL HAS EXPERIENCE

There’s nothing worse than having everyone standing around at your wedding not knowing what to do next. Hiring someone who has experience will most definitely help your stress levels both before and during the wedding. A professional with experience will also have a specific way of doing things, so there won’t be too much guesswork for you while planning your wedding. The last thing you want to have to do while planning your wedding is figure out what your friend is supposed to be doing!

3. YOU WILL GET “WOW FACTOR” RESULTS FROM A PROFESSIONAL.

… Or in other words, you get what you PAY for! Hiring a professional will ensure that you get a great result. It may not always be the most ideal option to spend money on a professional, but really and truly, paying for a service makes SUCH a huge difference! Not to mention that yes, there’s a contract involved, and as I stated before, they are obligated to provide you with those awesome results.

4. ELIMINATES THE WORRY ABOUT STRAINING YOUR FRIENDSHIP

… Or in other words, you get what you PAY for! Hiring a professional will ensure that you get a great result. 5. YOU WANT YOUR FRIENDS TO ENJOY YOUR WEDDING!!

If they truly are your friend, you’ll want to have them at your wedding and enjoy it.

There CAN be friends that help out with your wedding with so many things and who will do a great job. But from my experience, it doesn’t always work out for the best.

With Weddings being super expensive generally, I totally get the need to try and make that Wedding expense less.  I don’t think however that great photography should be compromised or less of a priority than other areas of your Wedding. The super Wedding Cake will be eaten; the money you spend on decorations can be arranged on a budget.

I truly believe that when planning your wedding, you should decide what “YOU” consider to be the most important priority on your BIG DAY … after all – these memories are yours for a lifetime.

After the wedding is over, what am I going to have left?  Answer: Your photos.  Everything else is going to be forgotten over time and only remembered through your photographs. When the music is over, the food is gone and the flowers have died, your wedding pictures (and/or video)  are the only 2 things left to bring back those memories and the irony is that most people spend more on flowers or food than their wedding photography.  Your wedding album will last long past your wedding day and then passed down to your children and grandchildren.  If your wedding pictures are important to you they should be a place in your budget where you give priority to.

6. THE ACTUAL DIFFERENCE BETWEEN PROFESSIONAL RESULTS AND NON PROFESSIONAL.

Below, I’ve put together a set of images from two Weddings.  The top images are taken by one of the guests, the other by us.

Along with professional knowledge and equipment the results do answer the question “what’s the difference?”
